Our precious mother, Rhoda Frances Tate Johnson, age 90, joined the heavenly kingdom on November 28, 2016.

Funeral services will be held at El Bethel Baptist Church in Chancellor on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.  with Dr. Michael Mynatt officiating, with visitation to precede from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.  Burial will follow at Meadowlawn Memorial Park in Enterprise with Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory directing.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the El Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, 94323 Highway 27, Chancellor, AL  36316.

Not a worldly woman, she loved God, her husband of 67 years and her eight children.  Daily, she would quote her favorite verse, John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.”

In her early years, she was an active member and Sunday school teacher at El Bethel Baptist Church in Chancellor, Alabama.  Even after falling victim to Alzheimer’s disease she never failed to mention God and her church.

Born in Pike County in 1926, her father died when she was three years old.  She, her mother and siblings faced the world with bravery and perseverance.  She attended Coffee County High School and later met her husband, Byron Daniel Johnson.  It was love at first sight.  After marrying they moved for two years to North Logan, Utah and were separated by WWII while Byron was in France and Germany as a medic.  As a wife and mother she had eight children and was a sweet, protective mother.  An excellent cook and gardener, she taught her children to do a job right or not do it at all.

We celebrate your presence with Jesus, and with your family, especially your husband, children and great grandson Luke Stewart.

Rhoda Johnson was predeceased by her father, Elijah Henry Tate, mother, Samantha Camilla Tyler Tate, her husband Byron Daniel Johnson, two children, Dorothy Mae Johnson and James Daniel Johnson, great grandson, William Luke Stewart, brothers John Henry Tate, J.D Tate, Floyd Tate, Doc Tate; sisters Alma Tyler, Bell Byrd,  Weaver King and Emma Senn.

Survivors include two sons, B.J. Johnson (Ellie) and Richard Johnson of Chancellor and four daughters Susan Carr (Ronnie) of Troy, Stephanie Johnson of Los Angeles, CA, Fran Viehweg (Marlow) of Logan, UT and Sandra West (Dr. Lewe) of Enterprise, AL; grandchildren Jodie Johnson Erwin, Jim Johnson, Samantha Carr Downing, Shannon Camilla Stewart, Jet Warr, Marlo Farr, Paige Viehweg, Tate Viehweg and numerous great grandchildren.
