ABBEVILLE…Edna Ruth McArdle Whitehead, a resident of the Brown’s Crossroads Community of Henry County, died late Tuesday morning, October 15, 2013, at her home. She was 80. She was a loving Mother, Grannie, Sister, and Friend.


            Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, October 17, 2013, in the Union Free Will Baptist Church, near Abbeville, with Reverend Ray S. Reiley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Thursday in the church sanctuary.


            Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Union Free Will Baptist Church, c/o Carol Johns, 2651 County Road 53, Abbeville, AL 36310. 


            Mrs. Whitehead was born in Kinsey, Alabama, and reared in Jakin, Georgia, daughter of the late James Barney McArdle and Glinnie Creel McArdle.  She was a 1953 graduate of Jakin High School. Mrs. Whitehead was a retired employee of WestPoint Stevens in Abbeville. She was a member of the Union Free Will Baptist Church where she loved her church family and fellowship. Mrs. Whitehead was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-three years, Billy Whitehead, and a sister, Lusetta Edwards.


            Surviving relatives include two daughters, Debbie Bern (Ricky), Dothan and Lesa Knowles (Tommy), Headland; a son, Chuck Whitehead, Brown’s Crossroads Community; two sisters, Barbara Anderson, Green River, UT; and Ann Harrington, Brown’s Crossroads Community; a brother, Gary McArdle (Ann), and a special sister-in-law, Betty Gamble, all of the Brown’s Crossroads Community; ten grandchildren, Brandy Brown (Wade), Grant Granberry, Jolie Harper (Chris), Neal Bern (Maxine), Chad Granberry (Savannah), Dustin Granberry (Beth), Anna Knowles, Katie Hester (Kraig), Traci Truitt, and Patrick Whitehead; nine great-grandchildren, Madison Granberry, Owen Granberry, Jackson Brown, Foster Harper, Ben Granberry, Karoline Hester, Caleb Whitehead, Trey Truitt, and Talia Truitt; several nieces and nephews, including special nieces, Krystal Hampton, Lisa Woody, Sheila Elliott, and Cynthia Baxley; special friends, Linda Floyd, and Marie Messer.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be the grandsons.


            The family would like to express their appreciation to caregivers, Linda Hallford, Mary Johnson, and Angela Armstrong, and also the staff of Alacare Hospice for the loving care and kindness shown to Mrs. Whitehead during her illness.
