STEVETTA  GREEN  SLATER


DOTHAN. . .Stevetta Green Slater, a resident of Dothan, died early Sunday morning, November 16, 2014, in a Dothan hospital.  She was 78.


            Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, November 19, 2014, in the First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Bob Baxter and Pastor Henry Morris officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:30 A.M. Wednesday in the church sanctuary.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church “Missions Committee Fund”, 3012 West Main Street, Dothan, AL. 36305.


            Mrs. Slater was born and reared in the Blackwood Community of Dale County, daughter of late Eddie Walker Green and Mary Wiggins Green. She was a 1954 graduate and Salutatorian of Midland City High School. Mrs. Slater attended Troy University where she received a degree in English and Journalism and was a member of Kappa Delta Pi Honorary Society, President of her dormitory, President of Religious Council, and Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges.  Upon graduation from Troy, Mrs. Slater was employed by Carroll High School in Ozark and later at Pryor Jr. High School in Ft. Walton Beach, FL. She returned to college to earn her certification in Library Science from Florida State University and was employed as Librarian at Valparaiso Elementary School. After she returned to the Dothan area, she was employed by Northside Methodist Academy and Providence Christian School as Librarian and as a substitute teacher.  Mrs. Slater was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Conference Room Sunday School Class. She participated in the Evening Circle and served on the Missions Committee, Women’s Ministries Committee, delivered Meals on Wheels, and was church Librarian.  She was preceded in death by two sisters, Cordelia Whitehead and Elzola Brackin.


            Surviving relatives include her husband of fifty-five years, Robert H. Slater, Dothan; a daughter, Sabrina Slater George (Robert), Coconut Creek, FL; a son, Andrew Slater, Cincinnati, OH; two grandchildren, Robyn and Wesley George; a sister, Roslyn Woodham Hughes (Joe), Dothan; a sister-in-law, Boots Willett, Cedar Falls, Iowa; and a brother-in-law, John Slater, Skowhegan, Maine.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Wesley George, Rut Crawford, Tom Parks, Jim Robeson, Jr., Dan McGowan, and Phillip Atkinson.
