TOM  WESLEY  MIMS, SR.


ABBEVILLE. . .Tom Wesley Mims, Sr., a resident of Abbeville, died Saturday night, April 27, 2013, at his home. He was 89.


Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 30, 2013, in the Union Free Will Baptist Church with Reverend Ray S. Reiley officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 P.M. Tuesday in the church sanctuary.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Union Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Will Maddox, 2651 County Road 53, Abbeville, AL 36310.


            Mr. Mims was a lifelong resident of the Union Community of Henry County, son of the late Euston Rodolphus Mims and Bessie Mae Bodiford Mims. He served his country in the U. S. Navy during World War II and also as a member of the U.S. Army Reserve in the Abbeville Unit. Mr. Mims attended the Union Free Will Baptist Church and was a member of the American Legion.


            Mr. Mims was engaged in farming all his life on the family farm where he produced sixty-five crops and was twice selected Farm Family of the Year. He was a past Director of the Henry County Farm Bureau and the Farmer’s Home Administration. Mr. Mims was a member of the Henry County Cattlemen’s Association and was formerly employed by the Soil Conservation Service. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Veta Mae Mynatt, Elba Rose Ethridge, Bessie Iris Armstrong, and Dot Mims Ethridge, three brothers, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Mims, Billy Edgar Mims and Charles E. Mims.


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Ruby Hancock Mims; two sons, Tom W. Mims, Jr. and wife, Paula; and Max Mims, all of Abbeville; three grandchildren, Casey Leigh Mims, Ashley Mims Cain (Robbie), and Chris Mims (Keely); five great-grandchildren, Mary Hinson Mims, Kathryn King Mims, Charles Davis Mims, Gage Cain and Aiden Cain; sisters-in-law, Caroline Mims, Maggie Carter, Teenie Harpe Tapley, Peggy Culpepper, Mary Lou Beasley, and Byrdie Mae Hancock Cordell.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Billy Wayne Bedsole, Everett Culpepper, Andy Harpe, Steve Newton, Chris Mims and Robbie Cain.
