Tommy  L. Ricketts

Tommy L. Ricketts, 95, a longtime resident of Dothan, died Sunday, May 5, 2013 at Extendicare Health Center.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Allie Freeman and Dr. James B. Sanders officiating. Private graveside services for the family will follow with Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 until 2 p.m. Wednesday prior to service time.

In lieu of flowers the family humbly requests memorial contributions be made to the Wiregrass Food Bank, 382 Twitchell Road, Dothan, AL 36303 and Botanical Gardens, 5130 Headland Ave., Dothan, AL 36303.

Tommy was born to Otis Grey and Sadie Heath Ricketts on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1917 in Lamison, Alabama. He was a veteran serving in the Army in World War II as an Electrical Communications Instructor.

 He graduated from Alabama School of Trades in Gadsden, Alabama. While there he met and married his wife of 72 years, Ruth Pounds Ricketts. His graduation from Alabama School of Trades began the journey which led him from Birmingham working for Moore Handley to Andalusia and then to Dothan where he worked for Mack Electric and later owned Tri State Electric Co.

Tommy was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Dothan Rotary Club and was a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award. The Alabama-Florida Boy Scouts honored him with the Silver Beaver Award and the Red Cross honored him with the Eva Posey Award for community service. In Washington DC, he received the Jefferson Award for community and public volunteerism in American. Various awards recognizing Volunteerism in the community are given each year in his honor.

After retirement his association with the Food Bank, Botanical Gardens, Landmarks Park & Boy Scouts brought him great pride and enjoyment. His legacy of love and caring has left our world a better place.

 Mr. Ricketts was preceded in death by his son, Tommy (Rick) Ricketts, Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ricketts of Dothan; two daughters, Debbie Ricketts Williamson of Birmingham and Lynda Powell (Jim) of Dothan; four grandsons, Ryan Slaughter (Kristin) and Jonathan Slaughter (Rachel) all of Birmingham, Scott Powell (Alyson) and Kelly Powell (Amy) all of Dothan; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Otis Ricketts of Valdosta, Georgia and Carl Ricketts of New Orleans, LA; a sister, Sudie Richter of Snyder, Texas.
