William Bruce DeVaughn died peacefully on April 27, 2016 in Enterprise, Alabama. A viewing will be held at HolmanFuneral Home in Headland, Alabama from 5:00PM to 7:00PM on Friday, April 29, and a funeral will be held at the First Baptist Church of New Brockton at 11:00AM on Saturday, April 30, Bro. Don Graham and Bro. Tim Davis officiating. Born on November 2, 1939, in New Brockton, Alabama, DeVaughn was a member of the New Brockton High School basketball team and he daily helped his father tend to the family farm. After high school, he attended Valdosta Business College, and, upon leaving, began work at Singer Co., where he would work for much of his life. In the early sixties, he worked for a couple of years at Liberty National Insurance Co. before returning to Singer Co. to buy his own Singer Sewing Machine dealership in Bessemer. After many years with Singer Co., he sold his business and retired to his childhood home of New Brockton where he built a house. From May 2004 to March 2006, he worked at Walmart, all the while raising goats for market on his farm. This was an especially happy time for Bruce and his wife, Ann. As a member of the Gideons and a devoted deacon of his church, Bruce DeVaughn spread the teaching of Christ wherever and whenever he was able. As a child, he attended New Brockton Baptist Church where he was saved and baptized. While living in Birmingham, he attended First Baptist Church of Center Point, and after retirement, Bethany Baptist. Eventually, he would return to his home church of New Brockton Baptist Church, attending regularly until suffering a stroke in 2008. Around this time, Mr. DeVaughn took up residence at Enterprise Health and Rehab, an assisted living home in Enterprise, Alabama. He would live there for eight years. His family and friends will remember him as a loving father and devoted husband and for his wonderful sense of humor. Mr. DeVaughn is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ann, siblings Margaret Edgar and her husband Jerry Edgar, Ginger Deraney of Fayetteville, GA, and her husband Vern Bassham, Kathy Holley and her husband Donnie Holley, daughters Anna Atkins and Amanda DeVaughn, sons Timothy DeVaughn and his wife Angela DeVaughn, Paul DeVaughn and his wife Kathy DeVaughn, granddaughters Haley Carter and Erin James, grandsons Will Melvin, Taylor DeVaughn, Daniel DeVaughn, Nathan Atkins, Matthew Atkins, and great-grandchildren Penelope Atkins, Vincent James, and Evan James.
