William H. Shelley


William H. “Bill” Shelley (Lt. Col. Ret.), a resident of Montgomery, passed away Sunday, June 21, 2015 at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery. He was 84.


Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Friday, June 26, 2015 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Marvin Ennis and Rev. Jerry Presnall officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Tolbert Baptist Church Cemetery, Newville, with Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00-2:15 Friday prior to service time. At other times the family will be at the home of a granddaughter, Laura Arnold, 378 Woods Road, Headland, AL 36345.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tolbert Baptist Church Cemetery Trust Fund, 4305 County Rd. 45 South, Newville, AL 36353.


Mr. Shelley was born July 18, 1930 in the Tumbleton Community of Henry County to Louie Lafayette and Emma Lou Herring Shelley and was a 1949 graduate of Headland High School. He attended the University of Alabama before being called to active duty with the Army National Guard. He served in the Korean War and continued his military service retiring as a Lt. Colonel, U. S. Army.


Mr. Shelley was associated with Farmers Hardware in Abbeville for several years. He later was employed with Moorman’s Manufacturing Co., an agricultural livestock feed company. He was well known in the Wiregrass area to countless farmers and retired as district manager. In 1988, he and his wife moved to Montgomery where he continued to enjoy his retirement. He was an avid supporter of Alabama football and has attended many games over the years.


Mr. Shelley was a lifetime member of Tolbert Baptist Church where he served in many capacities including chairman of the deacons. He also attended Boylston United Methodist Church in Montgomery for over 20 years where he was actively involved. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be dearly missed.


Mr. Shelley is predeceased by his parents and a brother, Daryl Shelley.


Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Joann C. Shelley of Montgomery; four children, Pamela Woodham (Paul) of Headland, William Wade Shelley (Christy) of Midland City, William Hart Shelley, Jr. (Kay) of Newville, William Andrew Shelley (Millie) of Kinsey; nine grandchildren, James Curry Woods, Laura Arnold (John), Tiffany Guckenberg (Jesse), Natalie Douglas (Derek), Matthew Hart Shelley (Rachel), Kassi Shelley and her fiancé, Austen, Katie Shelley, Amanda Doswell (Adam) and Amber Shelley; five great grandchildren, Mally Arnold, Carson Arnold, Roman Guckenberg, Ezra Guckenberg, and Brooklynn Douglas; three sisters, Mary Jane Favor (Guy), Cindy Bond (Jimmy) and Julia Ann Griffin; several nieces and nephews also survive.


Active pallbearers will be Matthew Shelley, Curry Woods, Adam Doswell, John Arnold, Jesse Guckenberg, Derek Douglas, Austen Faulk and Brent Griffin.


The family would like to thank the Fire/EMT personnel at Maxwell Air Force Base and the staff of Jackson Hospital for their care of our loved one.
