William Steve “Billy” Borders of Fort Walton Beach, FL, passed away October 2, 2015, in the Enterprise Health & Rehab Center, Enterprise, AL.  He was 95 years old.

A private family graveside service will be held in Fort Walton Beach later this Fall.

Billy was born in Stephenville, TX, and joined the Army Air Corps as a pilot in 1941.  He served in World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War during his career as a fighter pilot, retiring in 1970 as a Colonel in the U.S. Air Force.   Colonel Borders flew several different types of fighter aircraft during his career but he was especially proud of his combat tour of duty in Korea, flying his F-86 Sabre Jet against the enemy MIG-15 aircraft.

Following his retirement, Colonel Borders settled in Fort Walton Beach with his wife, Sara Cecilia Moreno.  He became an active genealogist, publishing a respected book on the Borders family in 1989, and establishing a Family DNA database for continuing research.  He and “Sarita” traveled extensively until her death in 2003.  In 2007, he remarried to Margaret Wolfe Nichols of Enterprise, AL.

Colonel Borders was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Sara Borders, his beloved daughter, Billie Maria Borders Peterman, and his second wife, Margaret Borders.

Surviving relatives include three sons, William Borders Jr. (Charlene), Enterprise, AL; James Borders (Kathy), Jacksonville, FL; Richard Borders (Mary), Elizabethtown, KY; eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
