Willie James Pelt
Willie James Pelt, age 63, of Austin, TX, was received home by his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 10th, 2016, while under hospice care in Gilbert, AZ, with his son by his side.
A memorial visitation will be held from 5-6 p.m. Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street in Dothan, Alabama for family and friends.
Willie was born in Campbellton, FL on 7/28/1952. He was raised on a farm with 11 siblings, three brothers and eight sisters. Willie left Campbellton to attend Florida A&M University (FAMU) in Tallahassee, FL in 1970. He graduated from FAMU in 1974 with a degree in mathematics and minor in physics. Shortly thereafter he left for NY (Poughkeepsie) where he began his career as a computer programmer (software) for IBM. It was here that he would meet his only wife, Angie Bankston. In 1977 they both welcomed their first son Lateef, married, and moved to Austin, TX in 1980. They would welcome their second child Rashaad (1983) and not long after their daughter Etosha (1984). He and Angie went on to raise their three children as best they could. Those results produced an aerospace engineer (Lateef), an MBA in business (Rashaad), and a Masters in psychology (Etosha). Willie would take ill in 2013, being diagnosed with stage four gastric cancer in February of 2014. Willie fought and battled with the disease long after his prognosis of four to six months, living another year and a half. Without the assistance of his youngest sister, Doracell, Willie would not have accomplished this feat. At the bottom of his heart he truly loved her and thanked her for this. In August of 2015, Willie went on to live with his son Rashaad in Denver, CO, who would take a new job in Phoenix, AZ in November. Willie finished his last months on this earth with family. As much help and care was provided to him during this time, he returned the same help and care to those looking after him. And for this, we are forever grateful.
Willie was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence and Odessie Pelt and his brother Cliff Pelt.
Willie is survived by his sons, Lateef (Bridgette) Pelt of Houston, TX, Rashaad Pelt of Phoenix, AZ, daughter, Etosha Pelt of Miami, FL, former wife, Angie Bankston Pelt of Austin, TX, grandson, Sadiq Pelt of Houston, TX, brothers, Clance (Mariah) Pelt, Lawrence Pelt, and sisters, Lillie Mae Pelt, Beatrice Pelt, Loretha Pelt, Jessie Pelt, Minnie Pelt, Carolyn Pelt, Alphelia (Benjamin) Heatrice, all of Campbellton, FL, and Doracell Pelt of Austin, TX. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
