Second Annual Wiregrass Relay For Life Youth Rally

On Saturday, December 3, over sixty local high school students gathered at St. Columba Catholic Church in Dothan for the Second Annual Wiregrass Relay For Life Youth Rally.  This event marked the kick-off for local school Relay For Life teams and their efforts to support and raise money for the American Cancer Society, a national charity dedicated to helping people get well, stay well, find cures, and fight back against one of the world’s most dreadful diseases, cancer.  Representatives from schools in Henry, Houston, Dale, and Geneva counties attended the event.  The day-long event was filled with exciting and fun activities throughout.  Students in attendance were able to learn not only about how to create their team and fundraise but also about what the American Cancer Society and Relay For Life are all about.   They were able to meet with survivors of this disease and celebrate their victory over cancer.  Fellow teenagers even shared their experiences with cancer and why they Relay.  The day of activities concluded with the silence and peacefulness of the Luminaria, a candlelight vigil honoring those who lost or won their battles with cancer or who are currently fighting cancer.  By the end of the day, students who attended the fun-filled event were excited and energized for the task ahead and ready to help the American Cancer Society to create a world with more birthdays for those who have or had this terrible disease.

The Relay For Life Youth Development Committee of southeast Alabama would also like to congratulate Carroll High School’s Relay team on winning the Spirit of Relay Award at the Youth Rally!  This award is given every year to a team in attendance at the Youth Rally that portrays all the of the characteristics of great leaders and incredible ambassadors of spreading the message and meaning of the Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society.

This year’s event was a huge success, and the Youth Development Committee would like to thank all of the Youth Rally’s sponsors, volunteers, and schools and students who attended.  Thank you all very much in helping make a difference in someone’s life!
