WASA (Wicksburg Association of Scientific Automation) Robotics is a group of individuals dedicated to engineering machines capable of contributing to the advancement of society. The WASA Team is organized like a business with four different departments to focus on the standards that have to be met for the Wiregrass BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology) competition. These four departments are Engineering, Public Relations, Administration/Finance, and Marketing.

BEST is a six week competition in which we are given a challenge to design and build a robot capable of meeting the criteria set forth in the game theme. This year’s theme is called “Pay dirt”. The challenge this year is to build a robot to maneuver in a mine that is too dangerous for humans to go into. The robot needs to make repairs in the mine and bring back samples of minerals that are located in different parts of the mine. Due to economics playing a large role in the competition with the introduction of the “market shift”, we need to control how much of each mineral we collect.

WASA’s departments accomplish separate tasks that help with the competition. Engineering is responsible for the design and development of the final product or robot. It is also responsible for the engineering notebook that documents how we use the engineering design process to design, build, and test our robot. Public Relations, or P.R. for short, has the duty of reaching out to the community about our company and the BEST competition. They are responsible for building the exhibit booth, which is displayed at the BEST competition (or game day), organizing meetings and interviews with news websites, radio stations, and school assemblies. Administration/Finance keeps track of all company income and expenses and maintains record of attendance and registration. Marketing is exactly how it sounds; this department basically “sells” the company through the marketing presentation, t-shirts, fliers, business cards, etc.

WASA will be participating in Mall Day on Sunday, October 18^th from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Wiregrass Commons Mall where we will show off our robot and our team to the public and meet other teams. If you have time, please come and support us at the at Wiregrass BEST Game Day on October 31^st at the Ozark Civic Center from 9:00 a.m. until about 3:00 p.m. We look forward to seeing you there!
