BIRMINGHAM - JEFFERSON COUNTY;      Four years ago a black man, Mr. Pettway, defeated 5 term Mike Hale, a white man, as Jefferson County Sheriff. 

Just a few months into Sheriff Pettway’s term as Jefferson County‘s first black Sheriff, ALABAMA Attorney General Steve Marshall, a white man,  ordered Sheriff Pettway to raid the bingo places. Sheriff Pettway said NO, that violence and drugs were his priority.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall assembled a task force from the AG Office and ALEA and raided the Jefferson County bingo. Marshall seized a lot of money. A federal lawsuit followed. The federal courts ruled that ALABAMA Attorney General Steve Marshall actions were purely political, ordered him to return the seized money because he and his staff lied.

‘Not one time in four years has ALABAMA Attorney General Steve Marshall assembled a task force to take back the streets of Birmingham - Jefferson County.

Imagine getting your child ready for school on a normal Wednesday morning, sending her on her way and hoping that she’s one step closer to realizing her full potential,” Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin tweeted Wednesday.

“Now imagine that child, a beautiful 14-year-old girl, having her life ended minutes later by bullets.”

BIRMINGHAM:     A Birmingham seventh grader has been identified as the young girl gunned down Wednesday morning in a shooting that also left her mother critically injured.

Birmingham police late Wednesday identified the slain girl as Moriah Quib-Marquez. She was 14 and attended Ossie Ware Mitchell Middle School.

Moriah is one of 16 people ages 18 and under shot to death so far this year in the city.

Birmingham City Schools Superintendent Mark Sullivan said they are deeply saddened by the tragic loss. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, school friends and teachers. We have provided support today for the school and will continue to offer counseling and support during this time.”
