1 dead, 1 injured after tanker truck hauling ‘hazardous material’ tips over on Hwy 79, road back open

BLOUNT COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE: Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon has declared that Hwy 79 is back open following the fatal crash Thursday afternoon.


UPDATE: The Blount County EMA has now confirmed that another person has also been injured in Thursday’s tanker truck crash on Hwy 79.


The injured person was a passenger in the truck at the time of the crash. ALEA Trooper Chuck Daniel also confirmed that the tanker truck was hauling explosive material at the time of the accident.


UPDATE: The Blount County Emergency Management Agency has confirmed that one person has died as a result of a tanker truck overturning on Hwy 79.


Authorities say the driver of the truck is the fatal victim.


ALEA Trooper Chuck Daniel says that while there are “hazardous material” onboard the truck, there is no threat to the public.
