WEBB:    06:49 AM.  Houston County 911 dispatched a motor vehicle accident with injuries on Bill Yance Road in Webb.

Webb Police Lieutenant Milhone was first to arrive on the scene. Lt. Milhone reported on his arrival the patient has a broken leg and other injuries.

Ashford Rescue was the EMS of jurisdiction. Based on the initial report of the severity of injuries Ashford Rescue requested mutual aid assistance from Dothan Fire Department For advanced life support.

On the arrival of Ashford Rescue the mutual aid was cancelled. Ashford Rescue felt their level of service was capable without Paramedic level requirement for treatment.

As I arrived the patient was moved from the wrecked vehicle to the stretcher and you could hear the patient yell in pain. Which would have happened no matter what level of service.

Webb Police, Webb Volunteer Fire, Houston County Sheriff Deputies on the scene.

Ashford Rescue transported to the hospital under trauma alert.

NOTE:    Emergency Medical Service comes in different levels of training and licensed provider of care. There is a Basic Emergency Medical Technician which can handle probably 65% of the EMS calls. The next level of service is Advanced which opens up additional levels of license that can administer certain drugs to patients. The top level of service is Paramedic Level which can administer more drugs which can severely impact the direction of the patient.

The final level is your Flight Medic. They are licensed that allow them to even shut down a patients breathing and they take over breathing for the patient. A burn patient, the flight medics are licensed to administer medication which I refer to as “lights out”. The patient is relieves of the severe pain and flown to a burn unit and never transported to a local hospital. Certain levels of trauma the same procedure.

If the patient’s condition is where unable to fly the patient, such as CPR in progress, the Flight Medic will board the EMS transport and ride in with that EMS service able to give a higher level of treatment to the patient.

The level of care begins in the 911 Center who answers the call for help. The 911 Centers are trained EMD ( Emergency Medical Dispatch ) where the 911 Communications Center who answers 911 is trained with certain questions to ask and step the caller through procedures that begin life saving efforts.

Just a few minutes ago I heard a call dispatched where the 911 Dispatcher advised responding emergency units patient unable to give appropriate answers to certain questions, which could have been like what day of the week is it, who is the President, … which gives indications to memory and could be a stroke.

In Slocomb, several calls over the last several months, patient not breathing. The Slocomb EMS arrives and because of Lucas Device are able to give chest compressions at the correct interval and the level of service on the EMS, the medics were able to get a pulse. Four days later the patient WALKED out of the hospital alive.

That is the reason the 911 Center are trained EMD’s, it is important the questions asked when someone calls 911. The call is being dispatched by someone else in the center and that EMD is focused on that one call and EMS units are updated so they are prepared for the correct service. And the appropriate level of service(s) are dispatched, such as is this a call to auto launch Survival Flight, or is a Basic EMT level appropriate and can handle.

It would surprise you the 911 calls gotten at 2 AM that my back has hurt for three days so they call 911 for a ambulance at 2 AM to carry them to the hospital. But every 911 call is treated as an emergency and approximate units dispatched to handle the emergency dispatched.
