DOTHAN:      12:18 PM     This morning Dothan Commissioners, D1 - Kevin Dorsey, D2 Aristotle Kirkland, D4 John Ferguson and D5 Gantt Pierce "castrated" the progress of the City of Dothan.


These 4 voted against the renewal of the contract for Dothan City Manager Kevin Cowper which is set to expire at the end of this month. 


D3 Commissioner Bradley Bedwell, Dothan Mayor Mark Saliba and D6 Commissioner David Crutchfield spoke good of Dothan City Manager Kevin Cowper and voted to renew the contract of Mr. Cowper.


Dothan Businessman Bob Woodall, Retired Houston County Commission Chairman Mark Culver both spoke in favor of the renewal of the contract for Mr. Cowper. They spoke stating that it has been a pleasure to work with Mr. Cowper and work to move Dothan forward. Both urged the Commission to renew the contract of Mr .Cowper.


Then Lisa Matheny, the Administrative Assistant to the City Manager spoke to the Commission. Mrs. Matheny made it clear to the commission she had taken personal leave to appear before the commission. Mrs. Matheny told the commissioners if they saw the manner in which Dothan City Manager Kevin Cowper handled situations and made tough decisions. That Mr. Cowper has done a great job. 


Mrs. Matheny has served as Administrative Assistant to other City Managers. She encouraged the commission to renew Kevin Cowper's contract.


Commissioner Pearce - Pierce -Gantt ( he complains on my spelling of his name ), Commissioner John Ferguson, Commissioner Kevin Dorsey and Commissioner Aristotle Kirkland could not give legitimate reasons for not renewing the City Manager contract. 


After all was said the commission cast their vote - Mayor Saliba, Commissioner Bedwell, Commissioner Crutchfield voted in favor of a new contract. Commissioner Dorsey, Kirkland, Ferguson and Pearce/Pierce - however you spell his name, all voted against the renewal of the contract for Mr. Cowper.


The packed commission chambers was literally mad as ever and disappointed in the actions of the commission in not renewing the contract of Mr. Cowper. 


Kevin Cowper handled the meeting with race and dignity and held himself professionally during the meeting.


RSN believes these four commissioners -Dorsey, Kirkland, Ferguson and Pearce/Pierce has done a disservice to the citizens of Dothan and the progress made.
