DOTHAN: TEXT RICKEY STOKES 334-790-1729 WITH NEWS TIPS AND QUESTIONS.
Received this question via text a few minutes ago. Why a unmarked Dothan Police car is always sitting on West Main Street in front of Covenant United Methodist Church?
He is there on Wednesday and Sunday's, hired privately by the church. He is there for to make sure when traffic is heavy and worshipers are going into or leaving the church are able to do so safely.
Several area churches do that. Southside Baptist Church, Ridgecrest Baptist Church and Harvest Church I know does that.
Years ago when Lamar Hadden was Sheriff of Houston County the Town of Cowarts was having issues. At the time I was a Constable in Houston County. A office which has since been abolished by Legislature in Houston County.
The Town of Cowarts wanted a Deputy to stay in Cowarts. Sheriff Hadden did not have the manpower and suggested they hire me. And they did.
The Cowarts Mayor was T.D. Whitehurst. Mr. Whitehurst has since passed but his wife serves on the Cowarts Town Council.
Mayor Whitehurst wanted me to work Sunday's in front of Cowarts Baptist Church to help slow traffic during church.
After six months or so I went to the Mayor and said I was only the band aid until they started a police Department. The Mayor quickly told me they would not be starting a police department. Mayor Whitehurst said they cause issues and cost a lot of money. And he is correct.
And still today the Houston County Sheriff Department is responsible for law enforcement in the Town of Cowarts. Because like every municipality in Houston County, the Sheriff is ultimately the Chief Law Enforcement Officer. And it is his responsibility and the responsibility of ALEA - Troopers. By the way, the Town of Cowarts has money!!!
You got more than you asked for. But in the early 1990's is when this happen in Cowarts and Mayor Whitehurst wanted someone handling traffic for the church.
Fast Forward to 2019....churches want officers to help people in and out of church parking.
