TRAFFIC HOMICIDE INVESTIGATIONS:       Many times the arrest from a traffic accident involving a death is not immediate.

Some people ask why?

A “small” traffic death investigation report will consist of 100 to 200 pages when completed by a trained Traffic Homicide Investigator.

Probably the average report conducted by a trained Traffic Homicide Investigator is about 700 pages.

The reports are very detailed. The vehicles are examined in detail. The scene is examined in detail. The vehicle data is downloaded and preserved in detail. The weather information for the date and time of the accident is obtained. The history of the persons involved for like the past 24 hours or so is detailed.

The tires are examined. The vehicle is placed on a rack in the air and examined in detailed from the underneath to the top of the roof.

The scene is detailed. The grade of the road.

Many factors go into the details of a wreck where there is a fatality.

Search warrants are obtained and executed on various information that law enforcement needs.

Sometimes arrest are immediate because the information on the scene is obvious of who is at fault and perhaps their intoxication level. But often times the arrest is delayed because of the amount of detail that goes into the investigation.

ALEA - Troopers have some Troopers specially trained to conduct traffic homicide investigations. GET CLEAR - just because it is referred to as “Traffic Homicide Investigators” does not always infer someone is going to be charged criminally. The reference is the law enforcement is specially trained to conduct in depth investigations.

Dothan Police Department refers to the specialized traffic investigators as Dothan Police CRASH Team. These are specialized traffic investigators the same as ALEA Troopers. Smaller departments normally request the assistance of ALEA or Dothan Police.

So when you hear no one has been charged, that does not always mean no one will be charged.
