ABBEVILLE:     The 6th grade class of Abbeville Elementary School selected Abbeville Police Chief Eric Blakenship as their "Super Citizen".

Abbeville Police Chief Eric Blakenship wrote on his FACEBOOK "thank you for the award and also a BIG THANK YOU to the school system for promoting programs so the students can strive to better serve their school, communities and families.

Chief Blakenship said this is one of his most prized awards, and definitely one of his most memorable interviews. Blakenship said it is not everyday you get to be interviewed by 6th graders.

Eric Blakenship was appointed Abbeville Police Chief sometime around February 2021. Leaving the Sheriff Department for the Chief job which pays around $ 47,000.00 a year. Blakenship commands a department of about 8 members.

Blakenship worked with Henry County Sheriff Department. He served about 18 years with Echo Fire - EMS, which was a volunteer before joining law enforcement.

Being Chief of Police or Sheriff of a small department means you are really never off duty. You pretty much have to always remain available for contact and remain available to respond.

Being a small town Police Chief and/or Sheriff of a small county, means you are normally one of the lowest paid public servants, on duty or on call 24/7/365. And your duties range from animal control officer to in charge of a major murder investigation.

You are the public relations director and have to train your officers to be be a public relations officer and a law enforcement officer.
