The Bay County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of a local man after he was charged with beating his victim with a slap jack while trying to rob him.

On Sunday, July 25, 2021, deputies from the Bay County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a home on George Lane in the Southport area in reference to a physical altercation between two men. Before deputies could get to the scene, one of the men fled the residence. Witnesses were able to provide a tag number and description of this man’s vehicle.

The victim, who lived at the address, was discovered badly beaten with numerous injuries to his head and face. He was unable to provide BCSO deputies and investigators with a statement due to his injuries, and was transported to a local hospital.

Shortly afterwards, a deputy responding to the house spotted the suspect and, after a brief foot pursuit, the suspect was apprehended. Investigation into this incident identified Christopher Todd as the suspect. Investigators believe Todd went to the house and got into an altercation with the victim. During this altercation, Todd used what was believed to be a slap jack to strike the victim, causing his injuries. A slap jack is a flat object containing a hard weight material that is swung at an opponent to inflict injury and is used in hand-to-hand combat.

Witnesses to the incident described Todd as the primary aggressor in the incident. Christopher Todd, 39 years of age, of Callaway, was charged on Sunday with Aggravated Battery and Resisting an Officer Without Violence. Today, the victim was able to speak with investigators and stated Todd was attempting to rob him when the physical altercation occurred. The victim also told investigators Todd used some form of pepper spray on him prior to hitting him with the slap jack. An additional charge of Attempted Armed Robbery was placed against Todd today. He remains in custody at the Bay County Jail.
