BOSTON (WCVB) - An EMT was stabbed while responding to an incident on New Chadron Street in downtown Boston Wednesday afternoon.

The female EMT was stabbed multiple times inside of an ambulance by a patient according to information obtained by 5 Investigates.

The EMT, a 14-year veteran of the department, was rushed to nearby Massachusetts General Hospital and was reported to have serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

"Our first responder family faces dangers every day," Boston Police Chief William Gross said. "There is no such thing as a routine call."

HOUSTON COUNTY ALABAMA:   Just this week in Houston County Alabama, yes right here where you and I live, a EMT with one of the 5 Volunteer EMS services in this county, had to fight with a patient under the influence of meth in the back of the ambulance.

The EMS Service's across the county are often times just the driver the medic. The medic is alone in the back of the ambulance.

The medic had to physically handle the patient and the Houston County Sheriff Department was called and four deputies responded.

After 20 minutes of the medic getting no where with the patient the Emergency Room Doctor instructed them to remove him from the ambulance. One ejected the Houston County Sheriff Deputies could take custody of him. And the deputies had a brief struggle has they handcuffed the person and took him to the Houston County Jail.

So the article you read about what happen in Boston, while lucky the EMS in Houston County was not stabbed. But they go through traumatic situations daily while working to save lives.

The trauma might be after the incident when the EMS crews are re-living what they went through. They all self evaluate themselves of the level of treatment given to the patient. Most especially children and young people with no medical history. But they do for all patients, re-evaluate the level of service given.

All the while the Volunteer EMS go through the heartache of funding to save lives. Some of the very ones that are vulnerable to needing the ambulance because of their health complain the most. Volunteer EMS needs your financial support to help keep running and operating.

In Houston County, outside the city limits of Dothan, five EMS, plus Pilcher's and Headland respond to 2,600 plus EMS calls a year. None make appointments.

Do you make an appointment for chest pains? Heart attack? Car wreck? And with every second click on the clock they do not know where or what they are going to next.

While law enforcement jobs have always been dangerous, they are getting more dangerous every day. But Fire and EMS have traditionally been seen as the good guys, just there to help and not arrest anyone.

But today Fire and EMS are receiving the society standards of this generation of no respect. And the funding level to support and sustain the treatment is awful.

Medicare and Medicaid, often times only pay $ 80 if anything for the medical transport.
