Chipley substitute arrested after vaping with students

CHIPLEY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A Chipley High substitute was taken into custody after officials said she was vaping with students.

On March 7, a Washington County Sheriff’s School Resource Deputy (SRD) at Chipley High School spoke with several students about students skipping class and hanging out with one another.

The students told the deputy which class the students were in, and promptly went to the classroom, followed by two school employees. Upon arrival, a student inside reportedly had his feet propped against the door so no one could enter.

The student was asked to move away and the deputy went inside with the other staff, allegedly seeing kids standing all around, including behind the teacher’s desk.

One of the staff asked the attending substitute, Cherise Renee McCorvey, to come outside and talk with her. The other staff member said he found a student, who was reportedly supposed to be in the behavioral classroom, hiding underneath the desk while staying inside the classroom.

The student told the staff member they had been with McCorvey all day and had been skipping.

The deputy said two students were escorted back to their classroom and McCorvey was escorted by staff to the office, effectively relieving her from her duties.

Rumors soon reportedly went around saying McCorvey had been vaping in the classroom and she may have shared the vape with the students.

On March 8, the SRD spoke with the original student who made the complaint, who said they saw another student hiding underneath the desk when entering the classroom. The student said the teacher passed a vape around and asked students to try the flavor. The student then described two vapes that were being passed around.

The deputy then spoke to a different student, who was asked if they saw anyone vaping in the classroom, and they said yes, and claimed it was hazy in the classroom from the vape.

The deputy was told McCorvey was “really chill and was letting kids in the class do what they wanted”.

The student also told the SRD that McCorvey had been adding kids on her Snapchat and sent a message to a student at Chipley High.

Another student told the deputy that kids were allowed to vape in her class and play music on speakers, and confirmed a few vapes were being passed around the students and the substitute.

A student told the SRD that McCorvey had been messaging them on social media and they thought it was weird, but that nothing sexual went on in the messages.

However, the SRD was told that she would follow the student and their friends around town and “act weird” around them, usually getting out of her car at the Chipley Sonic the group hung out at to try and talk to them.

Finally, when speaking to another student, it was reportedly learned the incident had been planned the night prior on Snapchat. McCorvey allegedly told the student she could hang out in her class if she wanted to.

When the student was worried she would get in trouble for skipping class, McCorvey told her it was okay and that she wouldn’t be in trouble. McCorvey allegedly told her to hide under the desk so no teacher could see her, and hide when the door was open.

The student also confirmed she was vaping with the students, and a video was taken of McCorvey vaping in class with the students.

McCorvey was charged with an act that causes, tends to cause, encourages, or contributes to a child becoming a delinquent or dependent child or a child in need of services., giving a child a vape containing nicotine in a school classroom and while school was in session with other children present.
