HOUSTON COUNTY - STATE OF ALABAMA:   Once again all Houston County buildings to include where you purchase driver license and and driver license will be closed on Monday.

The Houston County Courthouse will be closed and all state offices. Also some or all banks will be closed on Monday.

On June 17, 2021 Democratic President Joe Biden signed legislation making it a U.S. Federal Holiday. This year June 19 falls on a Sunday ( Father's Day ), so the Federal Holiday will be observed on Monday, June 20.

Juneteenth, which is June 19, is the traditional commencement day of the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.

Juneteenth was originally celebrated in Texas,on June 19, 1866. It marked the first anniversary of the day that African Americans there first learmed of the Emancipation Proclamation, more than two years after it was initially issued.

The holiday was originally celebrated with prayer meetings and by singing spirituals and wearing new clothes to represent newfound freedom. Within a few years, African Americans were celebrating Juneteenth in otherstates, making it an annual tradition.

While the State of Alabama, Houston County, several banks such as Wells Fargo will be closed to celebrate the Commencement Day of the Emancipation ofEnslaved People in the United States, the City of Dothan entire workforce will be working and the City of Dothan does not observe this days as a holiday.

The Houston County workforce works only four days a week. The Houston County Commission "says" the four day work week saves money but has never "proved" the four day work week.

With the four day work week Houston County is closed on Fridays. With the Monday holiday it will mean the Houston County workforce will once again only work three days this upcoming week.

Over the last 22 work days, the Houston County workforce has only worked 12 days with 10 off days.
