BIRMINGHAM: Brennesha Sampson stood next to a small mound of dirt that covered the blood-soaked ground where her mother was killed just 24 hours earlier, visibly emotional at the reminder of what she has lost.
Still, as painful as it was, it was where Sampson wanted to be – as close as possible to the woman she described as her “first love.”
"As I stand here, I smell my mother’s blood,'' Sampson said of 66-year-old Fannie Carter. “It’s covered up, but I can still see it. It’s here. She lay here face down and just passed away in an obscene way.”
