WHAT ??? is it like to be a new police officer?

When I started my journey in 1977 under Houston County Sheriff A.B. Clark, the Sheriff of the county was "the man". If you received a message the Sheriff wanted to see you, without question you went.

The Sheriff of the county knew the people of the county. Two friends would get into a disagreement and one would get warrants on the other. The Sheriff would call them into his office and a very stern talking to, that they were friends and resolve the issue, end of the case and issue.

Today, they are arrested and the friendship ends, and the case winds through the court system.

When I started in 1977 the business community knew the Sheriff. The business community would call the Sheriff when they had issues, no matter what time. The Clark family probably never ate a meal where Sheriff Clark did not spend most of the time on the phone talking to someone who had a problem.

And when you saw Sheriff Clark walk in with his pistol on, get ready. Because he never wore his gun.

Today that has changed. When people receive a message the Sheriff wants to see them, often times their reply is, oh well... he knows how to find me. The Director of the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce, I asked him once would he feel comfortable to call the Sheriff at 2 in the morning ( not Sheriff Valenza, this was years ago ). His reply was, no - that he would probably call the Commission Chairman and get him to call the Sheriff.

Times have changed. Jackson County Florida Sheriff Johnny McDaniel had the grandchildren one weekend and locked his weapon up in the lock box of the Tahoe. That Monday he worked in the office all day and nothing happened. He left the office that afternoon talking to his wife on the Nextel radio-phone. She told her husband ( the Sheriff ) someone was in the yard, then screamed, and her husband ( the Sheriff ) could not get her to answer.

The Sheriff threw the Nextel down, yelled on the Sheriff Department radio to get to his house. One Deputy arrived.

Sheriff McDaniel arrived and as he turned into the yard two more deputies rolled into the yard with him.

Sheriff McDaniel's weapon was still in the locked box in the Tahoe.

The Sheriff saw the first deputy on the ground and Mrs. McDaniel on the ground. The Sheriff jumps from the Tahoe running to his wife and the deputy on the ground. While he was running two gunman were shooting at him trying to kill him.

The two deputies who rolled into the yard with him were rapid firing into the woods until they could see the gunman and were able to shoot and kill them.

The Sheriff's wife and first deputy at his house were both dead.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A POLICE OFFICER RECRUIT

A six minute video depicting recruit police officers on the streets in California.

Today law enforcement officers come under major scrutiny on how incidents are handled when they have to make a decision in seconds.

When law enforcement officers arrive they never know how they will be greeted. Sometimes they will be greeted nice, sometimes hostile. What begins pleasant ends in tragedy within seconds for "experts" to question how the officers handle situations.

Times have changed.

Jackson County Sheriff Johnny McDaniel was Sheriff Elect and his dad was murdered while working at a gas station late at night north of Campbellton.

Jackson County Sheriff Johnny McDaniel ended 25 or so years as Sheriff with his wife and a deputy being murdered in his yard.

At the beginning I said Sheriff A.B. Clark never wore his gun. In 2020 you never walk outside your home without your gun, a extra clip, and wear it everywhere, including to church.
