HOUSTON COUNTY:     Do you favor the adoption of Act 2020 - 191 of the 2020 session of the Alabama Legislature?

A question on the ballot for November 3rd election. The question is not defined clear which was a oversight in the legislation. It was not caught until time to place on the ballot the wording was only: Do you favor the adoption of Act 2020 - 191 of the 2020 session of the Alabama Legislature?

This Act 2020 - 191 will provide funding for EMS ( Emergency Medical Services ) in the 587 square miles of Houston County. The funding will come from a $ 5.00 fee on license plate purchases.

The process has been and is transparent. The legislative session was this year was interrupted because of COVID and the wording was not caught until the ballots were printed.

The emergency medical units in Houston County have joined together into the Houston County EMS Association. The members include: Ashford EMS, Columbia EMS, Cottonwood EMS, Dothan Fire, Pilcher Ambulance, Rehobeth EMS, Wicksburg EMS, and Dothan-Houston County Emergency Management.

The members from all of the above named organizations along with Houston County Commissioner Doug Sinquefield have been meeting weekly for most of 2020. The have become organized and working together to promote a unified emergency medical system in all 587 square miles of Houston County.

Dothan Fire Department receives sales tax funding in the City of Dothan. The county EMS units each receive $ 26,000.00 from Houston County Commission. But in all of the 587 square miles of this county there are some 16,000 EMS calls answered.

The goal with this funding is having timely access to a well-equipped ambulance, which is a crucial factor in emergency situations when every second counts. The need for ambulances are not made by appointment but normally by a sudden onset of circumstances, medical or trauma.

The Houston County EMS Association ask the registered voters of Houston County to vote YES to this question.
