Dothan Houston County Library System Hires New Library Director

DOTHAN: The Dothan Houston County Library System’s Board has hired Cynthia Plesner as the new Library Director of the Dothan Houston County Library System. Plesner was confirmed by the full Library Board at a meeting at the end of April and will begin her tenure on June 1, 2019.

“The Dothan Houston County Library System looks forward to bringing on board a new director with a wide range of experiences,” said Gloria Jeffcoat, Chairperson of the Dothan Houston County Library System’s Personnel Committee. “Cynthia’s enthusiasm about guiding the library will provide the catalyst for a great future for library service for our communities.”

As Library Director, Plesner will work closely with the Board and staff on developing and implementing the library’s Strategic Plan while actively engaging in public relations and media opportunities. She will also work on developing entrepreneurial and fundraising opportunities as well as seek collaborative partnerships.

“I am excited to join such a dynamic and dedicated library team and the charming Wiregrass community that loves and values their library system,” Plesner said. “The future is bright for libraries and we have great things ahead for the Dothan Houston County Library System.”

Plesner joins DHCLS from the Sunshine State where she has worked in three library systems in Central Florida. While she was the Library Director for the City of Tavares Public Library in Lake County Florida, she helped secure and implement a grant to provide a “Welcome Baby” bag that included a soft book and a babies’ first library card for every newborn child delivered in the City of Tavares.

As a participant in the Sunshine State Library Leadership Institute, Plesner led an initiative to increase library access to all public school students by fostering a partnership between the Marion County Public Library System and the Marion County Public School District.

Plesner was appointed by Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner to serve on the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Grant Panel and holds a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s in Library and Information Science from Florida State University.
