Dothan, AL: As part of National Library Week, the Dothan Houston County Library System (DHCLS) will celebrate DHCLS Giving Day on Thursday, April 11.  During the 24-hour campaign, DHCLS has a goal of encouraging 75 donors to contribute to the DHCLS Annual Fund.  Funds raised through DHCLS Giving Day will help enhance library programs, expand library collections, and maintain library facilities.  Donations can be made online at www.dhcls.org/give.

"Every dollar counts," says DHCLS Director Chris Warren.  "We’re fortunate here in Dothan and Houston County to have such an incredible resource in our public library.  It’s because of generous supporters -- our individual donors, our Friends of the Library, and our local government agencies -- that we can provide these wonderful programs and services for our community."

The campaign’s goal of 75 donors is intentional, according to Warren.  DHCLS transitioned from a subscription library to a public library in April of 1949 – exactly 75 years ago.  Over the course of its history, DHCLS has operated out of a general store, a courthouse, a former elementary school, and even the Dothan Opera House. Today, DHCLS now serves residents of Dothan and Houston County with three physical locations, a bookmobile, and a variety of online services and digital resources.

DHCLS will commemorate its 75th anniversary with a celebration on social media throughout National Library Week (April 7 through April 13), including highlights of the library’s past, present, and future.  Library staff are also planning a series of programs and events throughout 2024 and early 2025 to continue the celebration.

For more information about ways to give, contact Chris Warren, Director of DHCLS, at [email protected].

Established in 1949, DHCLS today serves a population of approximately 107,000 residents through its main library, two branches, a bookmobile, and an extensive selection of ebooks and digital resources. In FY 2023, DHCLS welcomed over 312,000 visitors, and DHCLS patrons borrowed over 201,000 items, including books, audiobooks, DVDs, and ebooks.  DHCLS offers a variety of innovative services, such as the Library of Things, a Seed Library, and Story Walks at Kiwanis Park and Walton Park. The library also offers programs for children, teens, and adults, ranging from story times, craft programs, technology help, and job search assistance.

More information about DHCLS can be found at www.dhcls.org.
