Dothan Police Chief Will Benny Press Conference

DOTHAN:        3:00 PM    Dothan Police Chief Will Benny held the 3 PM press conference. 


Chief Benny said the first calls were at Motel Six where a subject hit vehicles. The next call was at Volkswagon on Ross Clark Circle. The suspect confronted a woman and her daughter who were at Volkswagon to drop their vehicle off. The suspect fired a shot at the younger woman and then attempted to carjack another vehicle. 


The officer and suspect engaged in a gun battle at Volkswagon. As the officer who was under active gunfire moved to a better tactical position and left his patrol vehicle.


The suspect received a gunshot from the officer. The suspect gained access to the patrol vehicle and then a chase went around Ross Clark Circle to Twitchell Road and Ross Clark Circle. 


At Denton Road and Murray Road the police vehicle came in contact with other police cars and became disabled. A trained Dothan Police negotiator then took over and was able to negotiate a peaceful surrender without a single shot being fired. 


Chief Benny said this is an event you can not plan for or really prevent. Chief Benny said he does believe a mass casualty event was avoided by the braveness of all involved from all agencies, Dothan Police, Houston County Sheriff Department, ALEA-Troopers. Chief Benny thanked CDB Engineering who was working on the road and started traffic control to prevent people to encounter the stand off and ALDOT who assisted.


Chief Benny said there are numerous charges. Dothan Police is in charge of the investigation from beginning until which time the officer and suspect exchanged gunfire.


From the point of gunfire forward ALEA-State Bureau of Investigation is in charge of the investigation. Both Dothan Police Department and ALEA-SBI are expected to have criminal charges against the suspect.


Chief Benny identified the suspect as being Jeffery Michael Stewart of Jakin Georgia. He has undergone surgery to remove the bullet. Chief Benny does not know when the suspect will be released from the hospital.


The suspect was not handcuffed. After encounter with police on Denton Road the suspect put leg irons on his hands. The suspect was not handcuffed when he engaged in a gun battle with the officer at Volkswagon.


VOLKSWAGON, EMPLOYEES, AND THE CUSTOMERS WERE ALL VICTIMS OF THIS MAN WHO CHOSE THIS PLACE RANDOMLY.
