DOTHAN:     01:36 AM.    Dothan Police this weekend have worked a concentrated Police patrol effort across Dothan.

Dothan Police Chief Will Benny was out on the streets of Dothan with the Patrol Division. He was sneaky on Friday night because he was quiet on the radio. But Chief Benny was proactive with the men and women on the streets backing them up and assisting.

The Chief of a department of 200 men and women is not required to be on patrol. There is a tremendous amount of administrative work, planning and meetings the Chief of Police the size of Dothan is required to do. But when the men and women of the department see their Chief of Police willing to hit the streets shoulder to shoulder, it makes a tremendous difference in the morale of them and their attitude towards work.

Chief Benny, as schedule allows, goes to some police briefings and sits with the officers and listens to the briefings. While he is Chief of Police, he attends those not to give any speech but to listen as the officers do and to let them know that he supports the officers.

Law Enforcement is tough today. What we thought would never hit our area, well it is here. It is a dangerous profession and dangerous on the streets. Just last Sunday Dothan Police encountered four or five individuals on Alexander Street near East Haven. They recovered four or five guns, two were stolen, and several went to jail. Information was they were preparing to get revenge on some others.

The concentrated effort yielded a lot of information and arrests.

Dothan Police Chief Will Benny is not a Chief of “look at what I am doing”. “See me on the street”. He is not a Chief of Police to be in social clubs, while he supports them, he is a Chief of Police to do his job t protect the citizens of Dothan. And he is a person who is determined that Dothan Alabama will not go to hell under this watch.

But Chief Benny is a man who in his down time has personal hobbies and family time. He maintains a good grip on what is going on, police strategies, and how to curb crime.

However there are some crimes of which there are no police strategies that can prevent. So law enforcement can only do what is in their power to do. And every move a officer makes is watched and those who are critical. Chief Benny stresses that he expects the officers to be respectful, to do their job, be legal in what they are doing. Chief Benny understands mistakes happen and if respectful and professional, mistakes can be improved on.

While he supports the men and women in the department, he has high expectations and will discipline or terminate one real quick if the situation deems necessary.

Because he was sneaky Friday night by staying quiet on the radio it was difficult to get a picture of him on the streets working. But from the workforce I was told that he was out and about and on the streets.
