The Dothan-Houston County Airport Authority has employed only four professional airport directors in its history. The first was Charlie Faulk in 1968, then Montiford Burgess in 1974, then John Norton in 1981, and Art Morris in 1986. On July 1 it will employ the fifth, Adam Hartzog.
Hartzog was hired as the Deputy Airport Director in November of 2014. Hartzog was born and grew up in Prattville and is a 2012 graduate of Auburn University. He worked in airport operations at the Auburn University Airport and then as an airport planner for Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood in Montgomery before moving to Dothan.
In his short time in Dothan, Hartzog has firmly established himself in the community serving on the Board of Directors of the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce, working with Visit Dothan, serving as an alternate board member of the Southeast Regional Planning Commission and participating in numerous fundraisers for local charities.
As the Deputy Airport Director he has developed close working relationships with airport employees and tenants. For the last four years he has managed airport operations, FAA compliance, airport constructions projects, and has made significant contributions to budget management and airport public relations. Hartzog replaces long time airport director Art Morris who began his career with the airport on January 2, 1986. Morris will retire from the position of Airport Director, however, he will not be leaving the airport.
He will assume a new role as an airport advisor and special projects coordinator. Morris will remain employed by the Airport Authority but will report to the Airport Director and will have a more flexible schedule to allow him to work more closely with the Chamber of Commerce and other community organizations.
Morris currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Aviation Council of Alabama, on the Board of Directors for the Friends of Army Aviation, as Chair of the Auburn University Aviation Advisory Board, and on the Dean’s Advisory Council for the College of Liberal Arts at Auburn. Morris’s new position will afford him the time to better represent the Dothan Regional Airport at the statewide level and to provide assistance to Hartzog and the Airport Authority with special projects and community relations.
In a statement Morris said, “I recruited Adam in 2014 knowing that one day, he would probably step up and take my place. He is the best Deputy Director that anyone could ask for and he will be the best Airport Director that Dothan has had. I am grateful for the opportunity that the Airport Authority has afforded to me and for their vision in hiring Adam to succeed me. Both Adam and I are very blessed to work with the best Airport Authority in the State of Alabama.
These men have always been very supportive and provided great advice and wisdom throughout my career.” The Dothan-Houston County Airport Authority is chaired by Charles Nailen and its other members are Hayne Hollis, Jimbo Loftin, and Jon Stuckey.
