CLIO:    On July 27, 2021 Ozark-Dale County 911 dispatched Echo Fire-Rescue Easterling Prison. Reports were a 30 year old male subject received a stab wound to the chest.

ECHO FIRE EMS:   11687 AL-27 Newville ( Dale County ) Alabama

EASTERLING PRISON:   200 Wallace Drive Clio ( Barbour County ) Alabama

DISTANCE PER GOOGLE:   24.7 miles / 29 minutes

RSN questioned why Easterling Prison did not dispatch Survival Flight with a 30 year old "stabbed" to the chest.

RSN has investigated this matter because the Federal Courts have gotten involved in the Alabama Department of Corrections System and issued mandates. And people with no clues are making decisions laced with politics and certain persons making $$$ rather than solving the issue. The Alabama Department of Corrections has made the State of Alabama Number 1 in the United States in the murder rate in the prisons.

So RSN questioned their actions.

We have learned the Alabama Department of Corrections has a contract with Echo Fire-Rescue for ground ambulance transportation. While Echo Fire-EMS was responding the ambulance medics requested Survival Flight be launched to respond. Ozark-Dale County 911, who does a fantastic job, did as the EMS unit requested and auto launched Survival Flight. The flight time was higher than normal with a 30 minute flight time which makes me think possibly the Georgia Survival Flight was being dispatched because the Headland Survival Flight must have already been on a mission. That is my guess.

On the arrival of Echo Fire-EMS at Easterling Prison and their observation of the edged weapon assault victim, the ground ambulance crew apparently determined the injuries did not warrant the need of Survival Flight and cancelled them.

FOR THE RECORD:  RSN supports Survival Flight and a huge cheerleader for Survival Flight. But if not needed, cancel. If "possibly needed" never wait until on the scene to get Survival Flight launched.

ECHO FIRE-RESCUE did launch Survival Flight while responding to the prison. When EMS determined Survival Flight was not needed, Echo Fire-Rescue canceled and kept Survival Flight available for the 911 call that had not happened yet. Always a good thing.

From Clio the medical facilities are limited (A) Medical Center Barbour is not a severe trauma (B) Southeast Health (C) Flowers Hospital (D) Montgomery (E) Columbus. But a inmate in the Alabama Department of Corrections only in state medical facilities is the best choice.

FROM EASTERLING PRISON TO SOUTHEAST HEALTH:    56 minutes / 49.5 miles

FROM EASTERLING PRISON TO 2105 E. South Blvd. Montgomery:  70.9 miles/ 1 hour 19 minutes.

The destination on a trauma patient is the decision of Alabama Trauma Control, not always the EMS ground transport ( ambulance ).

I will have to praise the Alabama Department of Corrections for contracting with a EMS Service that is normally always equipped with Advanced Life Support staff. The Barbour County EMS units do all they can do but depend on volunteers.

RSN concern is with the reputation Alabama Department of Corrections has earned for Alabama in being number one for the murder rate in prisons. And just because a person is in prison does not mean their life is useless. Good people make mistakes and their lives can be changed.

And the State of Alabama has a duty to protect those persons who their freedoms are stripped from. I am not soft on crime but I am also not for placing people in danger in a helpless situation.

Without the input of the persons working in the prison system, I am sorry but Governor Kay Ivey and members of the Alabama Legislature can not solve the problem. The Indians in the system need more input on solving the problems then the Governor, Legislature, A Republican or a Democrat.

But it concerns me the distance the EMS provider has to travel to arrive on the scene and the distance the EMS provider has to travel to reach a medical facility.

ECHO FIRE-RESCUE ... you folks do a good job. You provide a quality and responsive service that the people you serve do not always appreciate. You, the boots on the ground do not get the praise and gratitude you deserve. THANK YOU for all you do.

FOOTNOTE:     The registered voters of Dale County did a good job when you passed the tag fee to help your Dale County EMS. But that is still not enough to operate a EMS service. Help these men and women out with donations. People often times forget those serving in EMS.

EXAMPLE COVID - do you realize it is the EMS staff locked in the box ( ambulance ) with COVID positive patients transporting them. And the Republicans and Democrats forget them and only give bread crumbs. While the Republicans and Democrats do not let people in the public buildings yet the EMS are locked in the ambulance with the COVID Positive patients transporting them to the hospital? Watch all of these millions and see how much is spent on the front line EMS...
