Yesterday, September 24, 2020, at approximately 1:35am Elba Fire Department was dispatched to a fully involved residential structure fire in the Shiloh community outside of Elba. It was reported an occupant was possibly trapped inside the structure and mutual aid from New Brockton Fire Department was requested for manpower. Engine 1 arrived to find a single story brick structure well involved in fire with police officers on scene confirming there was an occupant inside. Firefighters made entry through the front of the structure where they encountered heavy fire conditions and structural collapse that had already occurred. Fire suppression efforts were continued in that area while firefighters attempted to gain entry to the bedrooms from the exterior. Heavy smoke and high heat conditions as well as a heavy fire load inside the structure prevented firefighters from making entry into the bedrooms at that time. Firefighters were able to continue fire suppression efforts and then perform a search of the residence which did confirm there was one deceased occupant. At this time the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Multiple mutual aids were requested for manpower as the scene progressed until the last units released at approximately 9:00am.

The fire investigation is being handled by the Elba Police Department and the Alabama State Fire Marshall’s Office. All further information will be released through these agencies.

We would like to extend a sincere thank you to all who provided assistance during this time which would include: Elba Police Department, Coffee County Sheriff’s Department, Elba and Enterprise Dispatch Centers, Coffee County EMA, Alabama State Fire Marshall’s Office, Enterprise Rescue, New Brockton Fire Department, Enterprise Fire Department, Battens Fire Department, and Fort Rucker Fire Department. Your assistance and efforts are very much appreciated.

We are deeply saddened by this outcome. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the victim.
