Environmental Remediation of Fuel Tanks at 100 Columbia Road

As a result of the City of Dothan’s proactive efforts to assist property owners who voluntarily address qualified environmental issuesin accordance with US EPA and ADEM guidelines, work should begin soon to drain and remove two buried fuel tanksfrom this site and properly disposed of.

The action will benefit the owner by clearing any environmental concerns related to the property. Two years ago, the City was awarded a $300,000 environmental assessment grant. In the case of this property, grant funds have been utilized to conduct a Phase I assessment, followed by a Phase II assessment when it was confirmed that two petroleum tanks were left in place by previous property owners.

At the time they were abandoned, property owners were under no obligation to remove petroleum tanks until the enactment of the UST (Underground Storage Tank) regulations in 1988. Today, City of Dothan Assessment Grant funds are assisting the property owner with a Phase III environmental, which entails removal and proper disposal of the petroleum tanks.

Soil testing will also be conducted to determine if any future action is required to complete the site’s environmental remediation. The work is being performed under the guidance and direction of PPM Consultants, Inc., the City’s environmental consulting team for the assessment project.

To date, the project has completed 10 Phase I Assessments and 6 Phase II Assessments
