HOUSTON COUNTY:    Former Gordon Mayor Elbert Meltion will be out of sight for 365 days as of June 29, 2020.

Former Gordon Mayor Elbert Melton has moved to 901 East Main at the Houston County Jail.

Melton was arrested on two counts of voter absentee fraud by Houston County Sheriff Investigators on March 14, 2017. Melton was indicted by a Houston County Grand Jury on July 19, 2017 on two counts of Absentee Voter Fraud.

On January 16, 2019 a jury of 12, in Houston County Circuit Court, convicted Melton on both charges. Upon Melton's conviction of the two felony charges he was immediately removed from office of Mayor for Gordon.

That is when Shana Ray assumed the duties of Mayor.

20th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Kevin Moulton sentence Melton on February 20, 2019 following a pre-sentence investigation report. Judge Moulton sentenced Melton to 365 days on each of the two offenses, run concurrent.

Melton filed for indigent status. On the granting of the motion for indigent status the court was required to appoint Melton legal counsel for his appeal.

Following Melton's appeal the appellate courts denied Melton's appeal on June 12, 2020. That required Melton to turn himself into the Houston County Jail and begin serving his sentence.

Melton did filed a motion asking for his sentence to be vacated. The motion read Melton is 73 years old, never been convicted of a crime and COVID-19 is a reality. Judge Mouton denied Melton's motion.
