On April 8th, 2024, at approximately 12:45 a.m., Geneva PD responded to a burglary in progress in the 1200 block of Pine Avenue. While in route, officers were informed that the suspect had set the house on fire and that the residents of the home were trapped inside. The first responding officer was able to locate the occupants and assisted them in exiting through a bedroom window.
Shortly after officers arrived, and before the fire department arrived on scene, flames spread to a neighboring home and it too was quickly consumed.
Officers notified that homeowner and he was safely evacuated. Geneva Fire Department, along with Coffee Springs, Hartford, and Samson Fire Departments responded. Geneva PD was assisted by the Geneva County Sheriff's Department and Covington County Sheriff's Office, and are conducting a joint investigation with the Alabama Fire Marshal's Office.
At this time, video evidence and physical evidence collected at the scene appear to confirm that this was an act of Arson. There is reason to believe that this was not a random crime, and that the first residence was specifically targeted. We do not believe that there is a continued danger to the general public.
As this is an active investigation, we will refrain from releasing any further details at this time. We also ask that any business owner or resident in the vicinity of Pine Avenue, or along Maple Avenue, review any surveillance footage from Midnight to 1:00 a.m, for any person walking or any vehicle that may have been captured on video. Anyone with information pertaining to this investigation, please call 334-684-6496 or 334-684-2777.
