WICKSBURG:    Tonight Houston County Sheriff 911 dispatched Wicksburg Fire - Rescue to a person not breathing call.

Within 3 minutes of the call being dispatched Fire and EMS on their personal vehicle were on the scene. Within 4 minutes of the call being dispatched Wicbsburg Fire - EMS Chief Wanda Andress was on the scene with the ambulance.

Within 4 minutes Dothan Fire Engine 8 ( Highlands ) was being dispatched at the request of Wicksburg Fire - Rescue.

Why is Dothan Fire mutual aid requested? Because Dothan Fire Medics are full paramedics with full drugs, IV's, and more on board and can give advanced life care. Fortunately only about 10% of the EMS calls or less require the advanced life care.

Dothan Fire Chief Larry Williams and members of the Dothan City Commission have never refused mutual aid assistance. Not only to the Houston County agencies but any agency transporting someone to the two hospitals in Dothan that call for mutual aid assistance.

Shortly after Dothan Fire was rolling they were cancelled because of the hospice orders.

Wicksburg Fire - Rescue, a volunteer agency, with a response of 3 minutes medics on scene, 4 minutes ambulance. Can not beat that.

The person not breathing was a hospice patient and orders in place not to do CPR.

HATS OFF to the fine men and women in Wicksburg for such terrific response. The departments across Houston County outside the city limits of Dothan, fire and EMS, responded to over 7,200 calls last year.

Since 1977 I have been involved in some way with Houston County Emergency Services. Have served as a Advisory Board Member and then a Board Member to include Chairman of the City of Dothan - Houston County Communications District Board ( E-911 ). My term ends August 22, 2019 which I asked not be re-appointed.

It was within the last two years as I worked with Dothan - Houston County Emergency Management and started keeping the totals monthly of calls the Fire and EMS were dispatched on, did I realize they were handling that type volume of calls.

And what it takes to make the Fire and EMS work.
