DOTHAN, Alabama, July 29, 2021: A groundbreaking for a new cemetery concept featuring community

space, gardens and art will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 5 at Sunset Memorial Park, 1700

Barrington Road. Finding new ways to comfort the grieving and celebrate life is a passion for Toni Byrd,

funeral director and owner at Sunset Memorial Park. Over the years, she and her husband Robert Byrd and

son, Andrew Byrd have visited funeral homes and toured cemeteries to see how others in their industry reach

out to their communities.

“We saw how other funeral homes with on-site cemeteries created beautiful spaces for remembering loved

ones, and spaces for the community to visit for a quiet walk or meditation about life in general. Art

installations in natural settings and gardens full of flowers and greenery played a big role in creating the right

aesthetic. We felt like we could do something similar at Sunset for our community,” said Toni Byrd.

Sunset worked with a team of cemetery architects and designers to develop land that had been in the Byrd

family for years. The concept features a pavilion, garden galleries, ceremony spaces, walking areas, art

installations, and a pond with fountains and flowing water, all nestled in a grassy meadow.

Everyone is invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony and view renderings of this new community

concept.
