Health Care Authority and Fellow Commissioners Tell Commissioner Herring NO

HOUSTON COUNTY:   This morning the Houston County Commission met in their regular scheduled Administrative Meeting. All commissioners were present.

The item which took the longest was the item to do with the Southeast Alabama Health Care Authority and the appointment to be made by District 3 Commissioner Ricky Herring.

On the agenda was asking the local legislative delegation to change the appointment process. Currently the Houston County Commissioners ( the Chairman has no appointment ) appoint 12 of the 13 members of the Southeast Alabama Health Care Authority. The 13th member is the Chief of Medical Staff.

The current Southeast Alabama Health Care Authority submits three names to the commissioner, with their preferred choice, and the Commissioner is required to pick from that list.

Commissioner Herring wanted to appoint someone else and asked that his name be placed on the list. The Southeast Alabama Health Care Authority Board refused to honor Commissioner Herring's request. So far a couple of months the Health Care Authority and Commissioner, mostly Herring, have been at odds.

Commissioner Herring said he has spoken to the legislative delegation about changes, which would require a constitutional amendment that the registered voters get to vote on. But all of the legislative delegation dos not support Commissioner Herring on this issue.

Well today, we found the majority of the fellow Houston County Commissioners do not support Commissioner Herring is legislative changes to the appointment procedure.

The item failed to be approved to be moved to the Commission Agenda for Monday.

So the current Southeast Alabama Health Care Authority and fellow Houston County Commissioners "BULLIED" Commissioner Herring and said NO.

There were a lot of hand twisting and strong arm done in this issue. And the Southeast Alabama Health Care Authority Board of Directors were more powerful than Houston County Commissioner Ricky Herring.
