This morning the Henry County Board of Education approved my recommendation to delay the start of school until September 8, 2020. My recommendation is not simply a reaction to the amount of COVID cases in Henry County. It comes out of my desire to make sure that our schools will be safe for our returning students and staff. Rest assured, we are taking every precaution to ensure that a safe and affective learning environment exists at all of our campuses.
I honestly believe, along with most educators I know, that optimal learning takes place in the physical classroom with face to face interactions between students and teachers. Equally important are the peer to peer interactions between the students themselves. Taken together, these actions produce well rounded young men and women who will be prepared to enter society as young adults.
Should you decide to take advantage of our virtual school option for your child, I simply ask you to consider all of the ramifications of your decision. Virtual learning is not easy and requires a tremendous amount of support for the student at home and limits opportunities for the student to interact with his/her peers. That being said, know that whatever decision you make for your child will be respected and wholeheartedly supported by me and the administration and staff of your child’s school. We are all in this together!
Do not hesitate to reach out to me or your principal with concerns or if you have any questions. Thank you for the trust that you place in us. We do not take that trust lightly.
Sincerely,
Chris Padget
Superintendent
