HENRY COUNTY: Henry County Sheriff Department has openings for Law Enforcement Officers.

Henry County has 568 square miles. Within this 568 square miles there are four municipalities: Abbeville - 15.58 square miles with a police department-fire department-EMS, Haleburg 3.38 square miles and no municipal law enforcement agency- fire and EMS, Headland 30.34 square miles with a police-fire-EMS, and Newville 4.02 square miles with a part time municipal police department and fire department.

Henry County also has Screamer and Shorterville Volunteer Fire Departments.

The total square miles of all municipalities is around 53.32 miles. That leaves about 514.68 square miles outside a municipality and the primary jurisdiction of the Henry County Sheriff Department. Note, the Sheriff Department has jurisdiction over the entire 568 square miles of Henry County.

Under Alabama Law the county commissioners are required to pass a balanced budget by October 1. The fiscal year for county government begins October 1 of each year and runs through September 30 of each year.

In the July meeting of the Henry County Commission Sheriff Will Maddox asked for additional deputies and additional pay scales to attract qualified applicants. The Henry County Commission has committed to those positions and pay scales to attract qualified applicants under certain circumstances. Those circumstances occurred and the Henry County Commission is now committed when they approve the budget that goes into affect October 1 Henry County Sheriff Department will be competitive with other agencies.

Other positions to be approved and in affect are patrol deputies. These applications need to be turned in and processed, interviews conducted and ready to begin October 1, 2021. The day the 2021-2022 budgets go into affect.

BEING A DEPUTY SHERIFF can be fun and exciting. You have plenty of room to work having 568 square miles. Some very positive things are happening in Henry County. That is if everyone with sour attitudes over some of these changes will pry their heads from their buttocks and give these positive changes a chance with a open mind.

It is now Sunday. Some need to listen and remember what is learned in church and get the attitude changed to make them work.

But a Deputy can have an enjoyable time, patrol the lake, meet great people, and be a great public servant helping others.

REMEMBER, law enforcement is not about how many cases you make in arrests, or traffic tickets you write. It is about building relationships, trust of the people, and gaining people who provide you helpful information to prevent crime and solve crime. Law Enforcement is more than traffic tickets, it is about changing lives and directions of those on the wrong pathway in life.

Law Enforcement is not about how many young people you can harass, it is about how many of those young people you give a business card, shake their hands, tell them you believe in them and to contact you if they need you.

Those law enforcement officers who think their jobs is to write tickets, stop everyone they come in contact with, and be smart butts need to reevaluate what a law enforcement officer really is.

There are those times when you must write a traffic citation, stop a vehicle, put someone in jail, but that is not all what your job is.

So being a Deputy Sheriff can be fun and exciting with your life changing every second of your shift.
