HOLMES COUNTY:A vital component of combating the presence of drugs in our community is understanding that behind every drug arrest is a story - a story of someone who has lost their way and a family that has been torn apart by addiction.

Sheriff John Tate’s focus on assisting those struggling with addiction to find lasting recovery is just one step in healing families and giving those stories a chance to have a happy ending. Arrest itself is not an ending. Instead, it can be a new beginning.

Each month, we share a story from individuals who have successfully completed a drug rehabilitative program through the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office and are now enjoying a new, fulfilled life of recovery.

Their journey. Their words. A message of hope for us all.

The September 2022 Spotlight on Recovery story comes from Alisha Mixon.

Hello, My name is Alisha Mixon, I’m 25 years old. I grew up in Bonifay, Fl with 4 other siblings.

We were raised by our maternal grandmother & aunt. If it wasn’t for our grandmother we would’ve been split up & put into different foster homes at a very young age.

My mother went to prison when she was really young & my dad lives in Alabama & was always working.

We seen them when we could growing up but sometimes it still wasn’t enough. I was molested at a very young age by my grandfather.

I grew up with so much anger, hatred & hurt because of it all. I started counciling & anger management at a very young age & it didn’t seem to help me then.

I stayed so mad that I took it out on everyone who I came in contact with & just hated the world so much. I even blamed myself for a while.

I was very rebellious at a young age. Nobody could do or say anything to me. I thought that I knew it all & nobody could tell me any different. I got into my first relationship at the age of 13 years old & got pregnant with my first daughter at 14.

The relationship was okay at first but things lead to another. It eventually got abusive, l was later introduced to meth at the age of 15. At the time I was young, I was begging for my partners time & attention but all he wanted to do was party & leave me home with our daughter.

I didn’t know that trying it that one time would’ve changed my whole my life. I became addicted to it shortly after & craving it until it became a habit. I ended up moving back home to Bonifay with my grandmother & got clean for a couple of years until I fell into the wrong crowd & started using again.

This time the meth had completely taken over me & my body. I was doing it every single day, all day.

I started selling drugs through third party so I could supply my own habit. It has ruined my relationship with most of my family & friends. But at the time I didn’t care. I really went downhill fast after my grandmother passed away in 2019.

I would turn to drugs to escape reality & to keep from having to face my problems. I kept everything inside instead of expressing and showing my feelings. I didn’t even realize how much time I was actually losing with my kids until it had gotten so bad that I ended up going to prison in 2019.

It’s sad to say that it took prison to get my attention but it’s better late than never. My girls was put in foster care a few months before my release date. My oldest two daughters ended up losing their father 5 months before I got released due to overdose. It has been an eye opening & heartbreaking experience for them & showed me that I’m all they’ve really got left.

I’ve been sober ever since. Next May will make 4 years sober all together. I’ve now gotten full custody back of my girls. Moved away, got a job, got married & welcomed our first little boy. Life has definitely changed for the better for all of us.

I thank God everyday for sitting me down before it was too late & really opening my eyes up to everything. Because now I can be the best mom that I can be to my children & now they can have all of me. Not just part of me.
