Houston County Sheriff Deputy Chuck Gray Saves 18 Year Old's Life

KINSEY:   At 1:26 PM Houston County Sheriff 911 dispatched Houston County Sheriff Deputy Chuck Gray, Kinsey Volunteer Fire Department, Headland EMS to a medical emergency.


The medical emergency was on Covenant Drive in Kinsey. Reports to 911 a 18 year old was unresponsive.


Kinsey Police Chief Robert Jones was off duty helping his wife and children putting up a trampoline. Chief Jones left his wife and children and responded to the call - on his day off.


Prior to the arrival of Headland EMS, Houston County Sheriff Deputy Chuck Gray administered narcan to the patient and connect the AED device in his Sheriff Patrol Tahoe. The AED instructed not to administer an electrical shock. The AED detected a heart beat and not to administer an electrical shock.


When Headland EMS arrived the patient was more responsive. The subject was transported by Headland EMS to a Dothan hospital.


Houston County Sheriff Lieutenant Bobby Hopkins was able to secure good prices  on the AED units. Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza purchased some AED units for just under a            $ 1,000.00. Those AED units were placed in the patrol division with at least four on patrol units placed across the county. Other AED units were placed in the Sheriff 's Office, Farm Center where Deputies work on different projects and some other strategic locations.


The narcan was a project of Houston County Sheriff Lt. Trent Blair in conjunction with Dothan Fire Captain Tommy Starling. The narcan is placed in the patrol deputies Tahoes and administered when the situation presents itself.


Houston County Sheriff Deputy Chuck Gray is retired military who came to work with the Houston County Sheriff Department. His quick actions were valuable to saving the 18 year old's life, in Kinsey.


The AED's have been deployed by deputies on different calls. 


What is an AED Machine? An AED or Automated External Defibrillator is a portable medical device that analyzes the heart rhythm of a person in sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). If necessary, the AED will deliver a shock to help the heart re-establish a correct sinus heart rhythm.

THE CARES ACT MONEY - Alabama Governor Kay Ivey and her Finance Director for the State of Alabama, Kelly Butler, were in charge of the CARES Act money. The purpose of the CARES ACT ( Coronavirus Relief Fund ) appropriations was for the funds to be used to prevent, prepare for, and respond to coronavirus only.


Alabama State Finance Director Kelly Butler, who has worked for the state of Alabama for over 30 years, said AED'S were not eligible expenditures under the CARES ACT. 


Sheriff Valenza felt the devices were necessary expenditures and purchased them from the Sheriff Department budget and/or funds. Sheriff Valenza did not attempt to purchase under CARES. He just purchased them to save lives.
