BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC/WAFF) - Birmingham VA Medical Center will reopen Friday with normal business hours after a multi-hour lockdown Thursday.
Stacy Vasquez, Birmingham VA Health Care System Director, released the following statement:
“The safety of our Veteran patients, guests and staff is our number one priority. The steps taken were to ensure we protect those in our care.”
The lockdown Thursday was related to authorities searching for 46-year-old Cornett Demetric Evans, who was wanted for a fatal shooting in Huntsville.
Our sister station WAFF is reporting Friday morning that Evans died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after U.S. Marshals and Birmingham police tracked him down.
