HENRY COUNTY:     Lifelong Henry County resident Jay Calhoun has officially qualified and announced his candidacy for Henry County Commission - District 3.

Jay Calhoun held the seat for District 3 Henry County Commission and did not seek re-election last term. Calhoun’s long time friend, Wally Howerton, Fire Chief of Screamer Volunteer Fire Department sought election and won.

During Chief Wally Howerton‘s tenure he was stricken with cancer and passed away.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey appointed Jason Hudspeth to fill the vacancy on the Henry County Commission. It is unknown at this time if Hudspeth will seek election.

After much prayer, after much discussion with Mrs. Wally Howerton, and her decision not to seek election as Commissioner, Jay Calhoun has qualified to seek the District 3 Commission seat.

Jay Calhoun qualities are he has served as Henry County Commissioner years 2014 to 2018. He has Christian values. Jay Calhoun has a “say it, do it” attitude, He is a supporter of FFA, pro gun, life long Henry County resident, and 13 years in law enforcement. He is currently an investigator with the 20th Judicial Circuit District Attorney Office for Houston and Henry County.

Calhoun knows Henry County, the needs. Calhoun has several goals for continued road improvement, jobs, more common sense in county government, improved medical and law enforcement response, improved cell phone service throughout  Henry County, and lower health coverage for county employees.

RICKEY STOKES WORDS …

In Henry County the Probate Judge also serves as the Henry County Commission Chairman. While the Chairman is an important position, understand, the Commission Chairman can not legally make a motion for a item to be considered by the commission. And the Chairman is not legally vote on an issue before the county commission, unless their is a tie vote. The Chairman is only allowed to legally vote in the event of a tie vote.

The registered voters selecting a County Commissioner is vitally important. Because it is the commissioners, not the Chairman, who actually makes motions for immediate consideration of a item by the commission, and after discussion, it is the commissioners who vote yes and pass an issue or no and present a item from passing.

It is not the job of a county commissioner to “rubber stamp” what the Chairman of the County Commission might want or “rubber stamp” who the Chairman wants to hire or what salary the Chairman wants to pay someone.

The above is Rickey Stokes explanation of how county government works and not the words of Jay Calhoun. But an explanation of how important the election of county commissioners are.
