A chase that began in east Alabama Monday ended in Jefferson County nearly an hour later.
The ordeal began at 12:48 p.m. when an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency trooper stopped a white Nissan Sentra for speeding on Interstate 20 near Oxford, said Trooper Justin O’Neal. The trooper approached the driver, 27-year-old Jacquez Smith of Memphis, and asked for his driver’s license.
Smith, O’Neal said, stated he had no ID. As the trooper began to move around to the other side of the vehicle, Smith took off at a high rate of speed. The trooper began to pursue the suspect and was joined by other troopers, as well as the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office.
