DOTHAN, AL, December 9, 2019 : On Saturday, December 14, more than 1,200 cemeteries across America
will invite their communities to pay tribute to fallen heroes by taking part in National Wreaths Across America
Day. Citizens will recognize our military veteran’s courage and sacrifice by placing a live evergreen wreath
on a veteran's grave. Sunset Memorial Park, in partnership with the local chapter of Daughters of the
American Revolution (DAR), is honored to host this event for the Wiregrass. The public is invited to attend.
There will be a brief ceremony in the chapel at Sunset Memorial Park, beginning at 12 pm. Following the
ceremony, local military personnel from Fort Rucker will escort civilians to graves where wreaths are to be
placed. The event wraps up in the reception hall with light refreshments and a visit from Santa Claus. Local
boy and girl scout troops will also be in attendance.
The mission of Wreaths Across America is "Remember, Honor, Teach." Organizers encourage parents and
grandparents to bring their children to Wreaths Across America.
“We sincerely feel this event offers an important opportunity to teach children about history and important
values like respect, honor and patriotism,” says Sunset Memorial Park owner Robert Byrd. “This is a
family-friendly event and is truly heart-warming, especially during this holiday season.”
This event coincides with Alabama’s Bi-centennial celebration and a DAR representative will include
comments about the milestone in the ceremony.
More about Wreaths Across America (WAA):
What is now an established tradition began as one man’s quest to do a little good with a few extra wreaths.
Morrill Worcester, the owner of Worcester Wreath Company in Maine, had unsold wreaths at the end of the
holiday season in 1992. He donated them to Arlington National Cemetery to be placed on the graves. Over
the years, the momentum grew. After a photo of the snow covered wreaths at Arlington went viral, national
interest in expanding the efforts was sparked and now WAA has events at 1,200 locations.
The 2019 theme is: “Everyone Plays a Part.” The inspiration for this year’s theme came from ten-year-old
“Mighty” Miles Worcester, the grandson of the founders of Wreaths Across America. While in Washington
D.C. for an event, Miles saw a U.S. Service member in uniform at the hotel where he was staying. As he
always does, Miles walked up to the gentleman, reached out to shake his hand and thanked him for his
service. And his response was simple and impactful: “Thank you...everyone plays a part.”
In the event there’s inclement weather, the ceremony will be canceled. Please visit sunsetmemorialpark.com,
