HOUSTON COUNTY: This week in Houston County Circuit Court the Judges handled Civil and Criminal cases.
One case presented before a jury of 12 was the case of State of Alabama verses Joseph Curtis Dozier.
Dozier was arrested by Dothan Police Department in the shooting death of his cousin, Christopher Grimsley on September 4, 2016.
In October 2016 Dozier was released on bond. In May 2017 that bond was revoked because Dozier was arrested on drug charges in Walton County Florida.
Dozier was represented by Attorney Stephen Etheredge and Dustin Fowler. The trial was a our day trial that ended today after deliberation of more than 8 hours by a jury of 12.
The duo criminal defense team filed several motions. One was a "Stand Your Ground" case. The State of Alabama District Attorney Office filed a motion of sentence enhancement based on the death being with a firearm.
There is a Writ of Mandamus filed with the appeals court in Alabama on issues the defense raised. Those motions were denied by 20th Judicial Circuit Judge Butch Binford. The defense appealed the court denials to the appeals court which ruled with the trial court, Judge Binford.
The Writ of Mandamus is in this article. It does a good job of describing factors in this case to help describe the verdict of the jury of 12.
