Agencies participating in the operation included the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the Alabama Emergency Management Agency, the Alabama Department of Transportation, the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles, and the Birmingham, Hueytown and Gardendale police departments.
More than 350 law enforcement officers and 150 correctional officers conducted a predawn sweep for contraband at Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer on Tuesday, recovering weapons, drugs, cell phones, and alcohol, the Alabama Department of Corrections said in a news release.
It was the fourth time this year that officers from multiple agencies have conducted such operations at Alabama prisons. Previous raids were at Bibb County Correctional Facility in June, Holman Correctional Facility in April, and St. Clair Correctional Facility in February.
“We are restoring order, creating safer conditions and confronting the problem head-on by finding and removing contraband that is the leading cause of criminal activity inside our prisons,” Deputy Commissioner of Operations Charles Daniels said in the news release.
At Donaldson, officers found 500 makeshift weapons, 120 grams of assorted drugs, 26 contraband cell phones, and 30 gallons of julep, an alcoholic beverage made from fermented fruit and other ingredients.
