DOTHAN: Dothan-based non-profit organization PACE (Proclaiming America’s Call for Equality) recently held its sixth annual Freedom Speaks: The Call of Lincoln and King speech competition for Wiregrass area high school students on Monday, January 17, 2021, at Wiregrass Church of Dothan. The event was free, open to the public and streamed live over facebook. Eight area high school students competed in this year’s event: Abigail Taylor (Headland), Areshio Walker (Dale County), Madison Ward (Slocomb), Kaylen Hamilton (Dothan), Riley Jordan (Carroll), Tabytha Cribb (Dale County), Jamal Maloney (Rehobeth), and Anna Fischer (Headland).

Students competed for awards equaling $7,500 in scholarships among a first, second, and third-place winner. Each of the participants presented either President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address or a pre-selected portion of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s I Have a Dream speech. The 2021 Freedom Speaks winners are Anna Fischer (1st place), Jamal Maloney (2nd place), and Madison Ward (3rd place).

If you are a local area high school student interested in participating in the 2022 Freedom Speaks competition, please conduct inquiries to PACE’s Executive Director, Maranda Weathers ([email protected] ).  More information regarding the 2022 preliminary high school competition event (held in December of 2021) and the 2022 Freedom Speaks competition will be posted to area high schools in the fall of 2021 and to the media. To learn more about PACE, Inc., please visit PACE, Inc. by website (proclaimequality.org) or by social media (PACE: Proclaiming America’s Call for Equality | Facebook)

The mission of Freedom Speaks is to challenge, encourage, and motivate students to develop a better understanding of history and its application in today’s world, while also offering a chance for the students to personally excel in competition. A panel of judges score participants on dress and overall appearance, delivery and style, quality, and clarity of the presentation. Scholarship amounts are expected to increase for the 2022 event, and students are encouraged to apply and excel within the competition!

PACE was organized in 2015 to promote America’s foundation that all men and women are created equal and was founded by Dr. W. Charles Lewis, Senior Pastor, Dothan Community Church, and Donald P. Bolden of CapSouth Partners, Inc. in Dothan.
