Lee County: The Sheriff's Office has received reports of yet another series of phone based scams taking place in Lee County. The caller will use the name of an actual Lee County deputy and tell the intended victim that they need to call a number provided in regard to an important legal matter.
When the provided number is called, a male answers, identifies as "Deputy __________" and tells the intended victim that : A) a warrant is outstanding for their arrest on a charge or B) they failed to appear for court and are subject to arrest. The scammer then solicits money from the intended victim and tells them they can "take care of the matter by the payment".
Attempts to question the intended victim to obtain personal information may be involved. The scammer states that deputies are "on the way" if the person does not comply. Various phone numbers are being utilized. This type scam is not new and takes place sporadically during the year.
Other east Alabama - west Georgia law enforcement agencies have seen this type activity as well. Everyone is reminded that the Sheriff's Office , other law enforcement agencies and the court systems NEVER CALL AND SOLICIT PAYMENTS for any issue. The best course of action is to NEVER give any personal information on the phone and hang up. We encourage all to communicate this information to others in the community and especially to senior citizens who may be more likely to fall prey to this scam.
